Nehemiah 8:2 - Additional Comments

The time of the reading was the first day of the seventh month. That was the day of the feast of trumpets (Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year), which is set as a sabbath day of rest, and on which they were to have a holy convocation (Lev 23:24; Num 29:1). The trumpets were blown on that day, and offerings were given. This also became the day (see vs 9-11) to celebrate when the altar was set up, and when they began again to offer their burnt-offerings after their return out of captivity.
This was nine days before Yom Kippur, the Day or Atonement, when the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies to sprinkle blood on the Ark of the Covenant for Israel's sins.
