Nehemiah 8:3

And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

Nehemiah 8:3 - Additional Comments

They were so thirsty to hear the word of God, they stayed there and stayed attentive for possibly 4 hours. When they heard it, they were overcome with emotion, weeping (vs 9).
Again, on the 24th day of the month, they read for 4 hours, then worshipped and confessed for 4 hours (9:3).
Note that the people were attentive while the book was read. These people were not attending the worship service out of obligation, from a set schedule, but they were there with a purpose. When you come to church, what is your purpose? Are you there out of obligation, or do you come thirsty, ready to hear the word of God? Do you tell the preacher to read the word of God, for you need to hear it?
