What is he replacing all these things with? The knowledge of Christ -- it is excellent. So many seek to know what is truth, what is wisdom, what life is about... and here is the answer. The knowledge of Christ is excellent, for it is truth, it is wisdom, it is the answer to life's grandest questions. If this is really true, then all else must pale in comparison. All else is but rubbish, compared to gaining Christ. Paul set aside all those things -- they are gone. But, he has gained Christ!
Who do you admire? Sports or military heroes? Business leaders? Wealthy people? Famous people? Why? "Imitation is the greatest compliment." When you imitate, it shows you value what you are imitating. That is the goal of marketing -- imitation. They create value.
If only we could have this same view as Paul -- all else is worthless compared to what we have in Christ. And anything we COULD have, too. Do you ever feel envy or jealous of others for any reason? Do you have regrets in life, or are dissatisfied with who you are or what you have?
Envy or jealousy, in addition to admiration, shows what you value. What you value, you will imitate.
Paul says "imitate me, as I imitate Christ" (1 Cor 4:16, 11:1, Phil 3:17).
