How are we to serve? With gladness!
Describe ways we serve God. Next, describe ways we serve God where we don't expect anything in return. It's okay to know God will reward us (Eph 6:8, Col 3:23-24). But that should not be why we do it. Although, it certainly is natural for us to enjoy the rewards of service. And since God does reward us, rewards are okay. We just need to check out our reasons why we serve.
This encourages us to go into God's presence with a song in our mouth. Begin our step into His sanctuary with a song.
Pagans worship in often with fear and dread, sometimes with physical pain.
In Buddhism, in the story of the Prodigal Son, he had to work off the penalty of his past misdeeds by spending years in servitude. How could this inspire gladness?
Here, the act of worship is service. Like verse 1, we again see worship from the heart - with gladness, with singing. We gladly serve our God.
There are times when we have long faces - problems beset us, or we are grieved because of our sin. God is actively involved in our lives to draw us to Him. Set yourself aside, and your weaknesses, and trust Him. Let Him take care of things, let Him lead through the troubles. See all He does for you - and you'll go to Him in worship with joy and gladness!
We need to set ourselves aside, and let God actively work. Whether we are beset by troubles, or are "okay", we need to marvel at God and His grace for who He is and how He works with us. Worship with gladness and joy should not be because of good circumstances, but because we know God and give Him reign in our lives.
When we serve, it's okay to know God will reward us (Eph 6:8, Col 3:23-24), and it's okay to enjoy the rewards of service. But that is not why we are to do it - we are to serve as an act of worship.
