Romans 12:10 - Additional Comments
The are basically 3 types of loves mentioned in the Bible:
agape - godly love
- e.g. 1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins
- e.g. Luke 6:27 "But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you."
philia, philadelphia - friendship or brotherly love
- e.g. John 11:3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick."
- e.g. 1 Cor 16:22 If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!
- e.g. Acts 28:2 And the barbarous people showed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
eros - sexual love
- e.g. Prov 7:18 "Come, let us drink our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with caresses."
This verse in the Greek uses philadelphia - brotherly love. We are not only to love each other the way God does, as agape, but also as friends.
And, we are to honor each other by letting them have the choice or better things. Not all the time, but when given a choice on which piece of pie to take, give someone else the bigger piece. When you've had your turn with the best thing, let others share in it, by having their time in the light, or time for fun. Think of what it means to others. Here, God, through Paul, is encouraging us to share in the best, most honorable, funnest, tastiest, etc. things with others. Honor others by giving them preference.
