I’m simply underlining how very much I need your help in carrying out this highly focused assignment God gave me, this priestly and gospel work of serving the spiritual needs of the non-Jewish outsiders so they can be presented as an acceptable offering to God, made whole and holy by God’s Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:14 - Additional Comments

Paul started out this letter praising the Romans (vs 1:8), but in much of the letter he reproves them sharply. He is not returning to commending them, to close the letter on an upbeat note, and to part as friends. Yet, these compliments were not flattery but a true acknowledgement of their worth and the grace of God working in them. It is always to the encouragement of others when we notice and comment on their progress and successes.
It was a great credit to the Romans to be commended by Paul, a man of such great judgment and integrity, too skilful to be deceived and too honest to flatter. Paul had no personal relationship with them, yet their character was known by him.
Paul's knowledge of them was only what he has heard, not experienced. While we must be somewhat skeptical, we should be ready to believe the best about people, and to trust them, especially those of the faith. Yes, they may fail us, but we should still be ready to trust them, to have high expectations, for love "bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things" (1 Cor 13:7).
Note what Paul commends them on.
He says they are full of goodness. This implies they practice good will towards one another - a sure way to invoke unity and prevent strife.
He says they are filled with all knowledge. This is the knowledge of things that matter, the things of God. Goodness and knowledge together! A rare and excellent combination - the head and the heart of the new man aligned with God. What needs to be done in your life so others see this in you?
Interestingly, he also complements them on their ability and efforts to admonish (softly reprove) each other. This in itself is a great skill, but you want to heal and improve the individual without them rebelling against the reproof.
