Romans 5:19 - Additional Comments

How terrible to have been in Adam's shoes and failed, affecting so many! Yet, we are much in the same position, and don't realize it. Our sins not only affect us, but our family, and the world around us. How many times have you heard someone who won't get near the church because of the "hypocrites"? The sad thing is to some extent every Christian is a hypocrite, because no one can live up to the standard we preach, which is God's standard of freedom from sin. Yes, the church is full of hypocrites, because we don't do all we want to do (Romans 7:14-25).
So when the world sees Christians they declare to be hypocrites, what has happened is proclaimed Christians sin, and the people around them were affected. The sad thing is because of a lack of a study of God's word and a lack of sensitivity to the spirit, the Christian may not even realize what they are doing. It may be gossip, slander, poor attitudes, fudging numbers, misleading (lying), etc.
And the Christian does not realize the negative effects of what they are doing. You have no idea who you affect by your sin.
Even your descendents - you are the patriarch / matriarch of a long legacy. Your attitudes and decisions may have years of consequences, often subtle.
But don't be discouraged, because in the same way your sins can be far reaching as Adam's were, so your obedience can also be far reaching, to your family, to those around you, and those to come. Look at Hebrews 11, and other great men who have followed Christ. Of course, we are a mixture of obedience and sin, each one having its own affects. Don't ever think that sin goes unnoticed, without affect. And don't ever think that your righteousness has no affect. Everything works together to build a package of who you are for God in the world.
