Romans 6:16 - Additional Comments

Regarding whether people can change (e.g. conquer sin);
- See "Can People Change".
- Generally, people don't change, except through a very slow, long process. Typically these changes are brought about by consistent, long lasting influences on their lives, whether positive or negative. Some become leaders, some become hardened. Some learn to fight, some learn to give up. It is a complex process of who they are, choices they make, and influences (like the environment, like the Holy Spirit's promptings, like circumstances, etc.).
- Robert Jay Lifton, a psychiatrist who studied human evil and courage by interviewing Nazi doctors, Hiroshima survivors, Vietnam veterans, and political and military prisoners, concludes that people possess an innate faculty capable of assuming varied shapes, forms, and purposes at will, in response to challenge and peril. It appears that people will readily change in dramatic ways through trauma or extreme circumstances. It may be that they are not choosing to change, but that they are reacting for survival. So dramatic change can take place in short periods of time due to dramatic circumstances.
What is our goal? Change as described in Eph 4:22-24 -- put off the old (sin), put on the new (obedience).
So, how do people change?
- The basics - admit your temptations, learn what the Bible says about them, memorize related Scripture, truly repent, ask for God's help, stay away from temptation, and visualize yourself doing the right thing.
- Here it says we are to give ourselves as slaves to obedience - again (verse 7), a slave does not have a reasonable choice but to obey. We need to have the mindset that whenever we are called to obey, we don't hesitate or ponder what to do - because we are a slave.
- GIGO - Garbage In Garbage Out - what you surround yourself with is what you become. Affect change by surrounding yourself with influences that will affect the right kinds of changes, i.e. church, personal Bible study and prayer, accountability, Christian friends, right entertainment, etc.
- Accountability. People pressure you to change, and it's difficult to change without someone(s) who are allowed to check on you, to be near you, to watch you. You need one or more relationships with people who know what you struggle with.
- Personal time with God. He will change your approach, your countenance, your desires, your attitudes, like nothing else will. He will get inside you and mold you.
