The disciples went and did exactly what Jesus told them to do. They led the donkey and colt out, laid some of their clothes on them, and Jesus mounted. Nearly all the people in the crowd threw their garments down on the road, giving him a royal welcome. Others cut branches from the trees and threw them down as a welcome mat. Crowds went ahead and crowds followed, all of them calling out, "Hosanna to Davids son!" "Blessed is he who comes in Gods name!" "Hosanna in highest heaven!"

Matthew 21:6 - Additional Comments
Note that when Jesus asks for things, His request is a command, not a petition. We may say to someone, "I think you ought to be doing such-and such", but Jesus would say "You ought to be doing such-and such". Is there anything Jesus has requested from you? It is a command. How have you responded?
Note also that they had full confidence, totally on faith, that what He said would happen, would happen. Faith is belief in things not seen, and at this point they could only trust that what Jesus said would be the case. And sure enough, Jesus was right. May we trust Jesus in this type of unquestioning faith. Even if it was an odd request, they quickly obeyed. The same should happen when the Holy Spirit pricks our heart with a request, e.g. don't say that, do this, stop now, reword that, etc.
