They marveled at His words. Compare to "Finding Forrester" -- they didn't know the source of the great words, and with His upbringing, they did not expect it from Him.
Note they marveled, but they still didn't believe in Him. Many may regularly attend, and marvel at great preaching, yet still remain unbelievers.
