John 20:19 - Additional Comments

This took place the same day as the resurrection. Because of the resurrection, the first day of the week became the Christian Sabbath, the holy day, in remembrance and honor of the greatest event in history. This is the only day of the week explicitly mentioned in the New Testament, and it often is referred to with reverence.
Who was present? The apostles minus Thomas (verse 24), and friends (Luke 24:33), and the 2 disciples that met Jesus on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:33-36). Luke referred to "the eleven" as a group, even though Thomas was not present at the time.
The disciples did not yet have any confidence in Jesus' resurrection nor in the power they had by their relationship with Him. They were very afraid of the Jews, similar to why Peter had denied Jesus just 2 days before.
Jesus' crucifixion was so public, and His resurrection so private. We might have expected the opposite, but God's ways are not our ways (Isa 55:8-9). After His resurrection He primarily went to those who followed Him (Acts 10:40-41).
We see more of Jesus total power over things of this earth, for He just appeared in their midst.
When Jesus said that where 2 or 3 are gathered, He would be there (Matt 18:20). This shows that He may not choose to be physically present, but is still there. (Otherwise how would He have appeared, if He wasn't already there in Spirit?)
It was at this time that Christ truly bestowed peace on them, for during this encounter they received the faith to conquer mountains, and subsequently the peace that goes with it.
